BMW Introduces 1-Series Cars in China as Luxury Demand Grows
100608, Beijing. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world's largest maker of luxury cars, began selling 1-Series hatchbacks in China as economic growth boosts demand for high- end models in Asia's biggest auto market.
The imported 1-Series cars cost from 273,000 yuan ($39,000) to 445,000 yuan, the company said in an e-mailed statement today. The model is offered in three versions with engines ranging from 2-liters to 3-liters.
BMW, Volkswagen AG's Audi AG and other luxury-car makers have added new models and boosted production in China as rising incomes spur sales of more expensive cars. The 1-Series may eventually go into production in China if imported ones sell well, China Business News said last month, citing the head of BMW's local partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd.
The 1-Series will compete with models including Ford Motor Co.'s Volvo C30. The 2.4-litre version of the C30 costs from 368,000 yuan.
BMW boosted China sales 42 percent last year to 51,588 vehicles. The Munich-based automaker builds 3-Series and 5- Series sedans in the country with Brilliance China. Its sport- utility vehicles and Mini-brand models are imported.
